Although female violinists were just as famous in the 19th century as their male colleagues and played just as important a role in the development of the repertoire and of contemporary musical taste, they have received little attention from historians of music. After years of intensive research in archives around the world, the author of this book depicts from the perspective of gender studies the career of the violinist Wilma Neruda - the female counterpart of Joseph Joachim - from child prodigy to admired artist. For over 30 years Wilma Neruda drew crowds to London's Monday and Saturday Popular Concerts. Here she performed with artists such as Clara Schumann, Joseph Joachim, Charles Hallé and Hans von Bülow. She regularly gave concerts in continental Europe and her tours took her all over the world: Australia (1890/91), South Africa (1895) and the USA (1899).
