The text of the poem "Heaven and Earth" has been written by V. Belsky for N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, who, for a time, was strongly attracted by the idea of creating a Mystery out of Byron's theme. [...] The intentions of R.-K. remained unaccomplished, but in a note-book of the deceased composer is to be found intact a series of short routh-drafts... [...] In my work I have made use of a few of the above-mentioned rough-drafts. [...] The dramatical poem "Heaven and Earth" is meant by the authors, both of the text and music, to represent a scenical work. Nevertheless the symphonic-oratorical character of the poem makes the performance of it in concert form easy. Maximilian Steinberg
